About this book
Heinrich Schliemann's account of his work at Troy includes a discussion of the strata, the layers of settlement found at the site. One passage notes that Schliemann finds the third stratum to show a lower civilization than the second, and links the fourth, with its traces of merely wooden buildings, to the Thracians in the Troad. Homer is quoted along the way, including a line from Iliad VI.
Schliemann also describes small clay objects. He mentions round terra-cottas shaped like a volcano, a top or a wheel, found from the surface down to depths of 14 and 16 meters, and balls divided into eight fields and covered with small suns and stars. Some carry the tree of life. Depths are given in meters with feet in parentheses, and numbered figures show the finds, such as No. 143, a terra-cotta ball.
