About this book
Heinrich Schliemann's book is subtitled A Narrative of Researches and Discoveries at Mycenæ and Tiryns. This new edition of 1880 carries a preface by W. E. Gladstone, maps, plans, more than 700 other illustrations, important additions and new plates. It is dedicated to Dom Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, and its frontispiece shows the Treasury close to the Lions' Gate, excavated by Mrs. Schliemann.
One passage discusses the kredemnon, a woman's head-dress, drawing on lines of the Iliad and the Odyssey, among them the handmaidens of Nausicaä putting theirs aside before a game of ball. Another passage follows the griffin through ancient vases, Hesiod, Herodotus and Pliny. An index lists entries such as weapons of bronze, wells of Mycenæ and gold wire.
