About this book
Tube, Train, Tram, and Car, or Up-to-date Locomotion, is a book by Arthur H. Beavan. The book carries many illustrations and an introduction by Llewellyn Preece. The text explains that dynamos or generators are situated at some fixed station, more or less distant, generating electrical energy, whence the current is transmitted along a central steel rail, or, in the case of some tramways, by overhead wires.
The text says smoke defilement is unknown and the trains are comparatively noiseless, and calls electric traction the refinement of mechanically applied power. The text invites the reader to visit an electrical power station, a small one, and says the writer has in mind that of the Waterloo and City Electric Railway. The text says that whether, as regards tramways, the L.C.C. will be the central authority recommended by the Royal Commissioners, time will show, but that meanwhile it has already established its tramway system, which can be seen at work in our midst. The text quotes lines that begin, "God made the country, and man made the town".
