About this book
The introduction recalls the narrator's funny letters from people who wanted, or did not want, inclusion in Who’s Who, and continuing criticism despite his long absence from its editorship. The recollections of receptions describe meetings where people talked and made acquaintances, with very seldom any performances and with simple American hospitality.
The narrator remembers receiving friends weekly at first, reducing the frequency as their numbers increased, and eventually giving receptions in honour of particular guests. The guest list includes Conan Doyle, Anthony Hope, Mark Twain, Mrs. Flora Annie Steel and Mrs. Frances Hodgson Burnett among the special guests whom the narrator's friends were invited to meet.
