About this book
Types of Prose Narratives is a text-book for the story writer. The text says some brief narratives are hardly novels and, though more than tales, are not what we technically call the artistic short-story, but are surely studies in realism. A section headed Suggestions on writing a weird tale says that, for a first attempt at this type of narrative, you might try the modern ghost story.
The text says the modern ghost is usually explainable, and that the author sets out to depict not so much the ghost, as the ghost’s effect upon the hero. A section headed Material and method says the material is comparatively simple, and tells the writer to build to a climax and stop quickly afterwards. The text says there are modern literary legends, and names Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving as an exquisite legend of a place.
