About this book
Practical English Composition, Book II, by Edwin L. Miller, begins with a chapter on the newspaper. The introduction says the object of the book is to teach high-school boys and girls how to write plain newspaper English. The text says that the pupil who does preëminently well the work outlined in this volume may become a proof-reader, a reporter, an editor, or even a journalist.
The text says that to succeed in English three things are required: Work, Work and WORK. The text calls the modern city newspaper a complicated machine, with a general manager usually at its head, who may be one of its owners. The text gives a model news item dated London, March 22, 1775, saying that conciliation as a means of allaying the present discontent in the American colonies was advocated in the House of Commons by Mr. Edmund Burke.
