About this book
Uncle Rutherford's Nieces: A Story for Girls is by Joanna H. Mathews. The contents list chapters called Two Peanut-Venders, Not on the Programme, Matty and A Cold Bath. A stolen gift brought naught but distress to Matty's tender heart when the ragged jacket was unbuttoned and the little yellow ball fell lifeless into Jim's hand.
A speaker tells Matty that some day he will buy her a parrot and a monkey; Matty, tearful, declined the monkey, but the parrot had long since gladdened her weary hours. One of the teachers came upon the playground just in time to see Jim deal a furious blow at his opponent, and as the rules against fighting within school bounds were particularly severe, Jim's was a heinous offence.
