About this book

Eleven-year-old Dora supports her wounded father on their walks beneath the lindens in Karlsruhe. Major Falk has brought her there to be near his half-sister, Aunt Ninette, as his health declines. In Johanna Spyri's children's story, their tender conversations about Dora's mother and faith sit beside the anxious routines of Ninette's household. Uncle Titus writes learned books, and visitors are expected to tread softly around his study.

The quieter scenes give way to word puzzles, interrupted lessons and elaborate games. Twins Wili and Lili turn a wash-tub into an imagined ark, with a cat and dog chosen as its animals. Their plans and their governess's assumptions bring comedy to the family setting. Readers can find in this story both a close account of a child's attachment to a parent and a lively picture of children's inventiveness in everyday surroundings.
