About this book

A crowded schoolyard in Upper Wood becomes the center of excitement when a woman and a small boy arrive at old Marianne's cottage with a piano too wide for the door. Ten-year-old Sally listens closely as her friend Kaetheli recounts what she saw, while Sally's brothers Edi and Ritz hurry home to ask permission to investigate. Johanna Spyri's children's novel sets this bustle within Swiss village life, where school lessons, family rules and neighbors' talk shape the children's days.

As September brings ripe fruit and plans to dedicate a new church organ, the children's rival groups prepare for their own battle. Marianne must give up her cottage because her earnings cannot cover its expenses, leaving the little stranger's future home uncertain. The story offers young readers a picture of childhood curiosity alongside the practical worries of adults, with music, village celebrations and questions of care linking its scenes.
