About this book

Across the road from Stineli's busy household in Sils-Maria lives Rico, a quiet boy whose closest pleasures are music and his friendship with her. His father works on mountain roads and building sites, and their shared Italian songs bring warmth to a home where his aunt's faultfinding often makes Rico lonely. Stineli, meanwhile, helps care for seven younger children and treasures their Sunday afternoons beside the lake.

Johanna Spyri's Heimatlos gathers two children's stories, Lake Sils and Lake Garda and Wiseli Finds Her Place, in an English translation by Emma Stelter Hopkins. The mountain setting, family duties and longing for a home shape its concerns. Prayer and the kindness of older people offer the children support, while music gives Rico a source of pleasure shared with his father. Readers interested in children's fiction about belonging will find close attention to small domestic comforts and the value of friendship.
