About this book

On the eve of St. John in the year 935, a young pilgrim in a weathered habit stands apart from a crowd in Rome's Piazza Navona. Tristan of Avalon is thirty, grave and out of place among the lanterns, tumblers and wine-sellers. Pilgrims from Greece to Saxony fill the city, many of them convinced that the end of time is near. He has come to do penance for a love he cannot forget.

Nathan Gallizier (1866-1927) builds his romance around that love for Hellayne, the wife of Count Roger de Laval, and around Theodora, a commanding Roman lady who arrives by litter with an escort of guards and claims Tristan for herself. A Grand Chamberlain named Basil plots in the background, and the contents list promises crystal spheres, sorcery and a conspiracy.

Published in 1917, the novel is a colorful piece of historical fiction, set in a city of ruins, shrines and rival factions, and divided into four books.
