About this book

Ralph Henry Barbour's Under the Yankee ensign follows American sailors aboard a chaser. In Chapter V, called Surrender, the chaser sights Cape Finisterre and the coast of Spain, then sets her course for Ireland, and Pete is jubilant. Once the ship enters the submarine zone, only Kennedy of the after gun crew has sailed those waters in war time, and the others keep their life vests close and watch for periscopes.

In another passage Dave is swimming in the water, calling out, when Pete reaches him pushing one of the chaser's big life buoys and tells him to take hold and rest. Elsewhere the men ride a slow Irish train to the barracks at Queenstown, where the squad receives new uniforms and, thanks to Quartermaster Barry, an advance of wages. Another passage has a heavy wave strike the chaser, and Dave flattens himself to the planks, gripping a davit.
