About this book

An electronics shop on New York's Radio Row introduces Mike the Angel, a power designer whose practical knowledge proves useful when trouble arrives. Randall Garrett's 1962 science fiction novel takes that combination of technical skill and quick judgment aboard the spaceship Branchell. Its unusual passenger is Snookums, a robot whose abilities have prompted a plan to move him from Earth to a distant planet, with psychologist Leda Crannon among those responsible for his care.

The machinery matters as much as the adventure. In one scene, Snookums studies the power crew's instrument readings and identifies a fault that the engineers can repair, then explains his reasoning at length. His steel face cannot show a smile, so he announces his pleasure in words. Such details give readers a story about mechanical intelligence, human trust and problem solving, alongside the uncertainty surrounding the ship's mission.
