About this book
The preface announces a decision to reproduce the illustrations with which the verses originally appeared. Mrs. Ewing wrote the lines to fit the pictures, and the preface draws attention to the detail introduced into her words. Fritz and the narrator are next-door neighbours rather than brother and sister, with their homes immediately beside each other.
The narrator describes climbing through garret windows in summer and sharing a large kerchief when the sun becomes too hot. The winter scene places Fritz and the narrator on a little stool beside the stove, while explaining that Fritz dislikes going outside to come in next door when the weather is cold. The speaker in My Love's Gift asks for a pure and faithful heart when parting, rather than wealth or fame.
