About this book
Patterns of sunlight on a nursery floor provide the first remembered puzzle in this account of childhood and kingship. Growing up beside a tributary of the Thames, the narrator learns riding from Bauen and studies several languages under his mother's direction. His tutor, Mr. Neville, makes history and geography vivid by explaining how decisions affect people and places. Lessons continue through walks, swims and close observation of the world around them.
The stakes change when the narrator appears as the king of Rudarlia, an imaginary kingdom. Papers recovered from a spy reveal details of military supplies and a plan to remove him from the throne. Cecil Starr Johns combines this royal intrigue with adventure and romance. Readers interested in stories of rulers and divided loyalties can follow a personal account that places the habits formed in childhood beside the pressures of protecting a crown.
