About this book

Five kingdoms share a round island where woodland fairies and human magicians live among forests, meadows and mountains. In the northern kingdom of Heg, Seseley and her companions Berna and Helda leave a castle for a picnic in the Forest of Lurla. Their laughter draws an answering laugh from a fairy, turning an ordinary summer outing into an encounter with the island's enchantments.

L. Frank Baum gives this children's fantasy a conversational storyteller and a landscape full of rival rulers, fortified castles and strange creatures. The middle excerpt follows Prince Marvel and his companion Nerle toward fresh adventures after leaving Spor. A formidable hedge interrupts their route, while Nerle's peculiar enthusiasm for hardship adds humor to their exchange. The Enchanted Island of Yew offers readers a fairy tale in which curiosity, companionship and obstacles guide the action, with each new country bringing its own puzzles.
