About this book
Vistas in Sicily is by Arthur Stanley Riggs. A note of acknowledgments dated Massy-Verrières, France, June 5, 1912, says some of the chapters which follow are reprinted by courteous permission. The contents list names chapters titled, among others, Discovery, Palermo, A Night of Dissipation, Cathedrals and Palaces and People.
The text says Sicily's insistent appeals for help were too loud a cry for the liberty-loving and adventurous spirit of Giuseppe Garibaldi to ignore, and that with his immortal Thousand he answered and became not merely the liberator of Sicily. The text gives two traditions for the presence of the papyrus plants, one that they were brought in the ninth century by the invading Arabs. The text says the faithful burro was surely a replica in miniature of Rosinante, long ears flopping disconsolately back over her neck.
