About this book

The verse tells a maiden not to weep because war is kind, while describing her lover's wild hands and a frightened horse running on alone. The regiment's booming drums accompany lines about men born to drill and die, with unexplained glory above them and a field where a thousand corpses lie. A shell is asked what the sea says, after a long silence in which the sea has kept its message for ships.

The sea appears to a maiden as a blue meadow alive with singing froth-people. The wrecked sailor sees dead grey walls bearing the grim hatred of nature. A voice wonders whether a lost love remembers their time together and whether the memory has become rubbish, like an old gown from another fashion.
