Last Words is by Stephen Crane, listed as author of Red Badge of Courage, Active Service and Pictures of War. The contents list, among others, groups pieces under headings such as Spitzbergen Tales, Wyoming Valley Tales, New York Sketches and Irish Notes, among others. One tale has wanderers chanting their song for help and beckoning to a ship out in the blackness, until a voice comes to them and says Hello. In the same tale, three giants clamber into a small boat and row cautiously toward the raft.
One sketch shows an old woman who breathed like a fish thrown out on the bank, while her daughter hung over the stove and placidly cooked sausages. A hospital scene has low white tents grouped around an old school-house, and two ambulances interlocking wheels in the deep mud.
