Henry Fisk Carlton's Washington Crossing the Delaware is a play that, according to a note in the book, has actually been produced on the radio. A note on how to be a good radio actor says that the persons whose voices were heard stood close together around the microphone, each one reading from a copy of the play in his hand. A note on directions explains that the word ( in ) means that the character is standing close to the microphone, while ( off ) indicates that he is farther away.
The cast list names General Washington, Colonel Reed, John Honeyman and Colonel Rall, among others. The spoken introduction presents the story of Washington crossing the Delaware and says that the fall and early winter of the year 1776 saw the fortunes of Washington's army sink very low indeed. A character named Rall says that if they had some boats they would soon make short work of them, but that the rascals made away with all the boats. A character named Washington orders bayonets fixed and the troops deployed ready to charge bayonets on command.
