About this book

We Philologists by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche is marked Autumn 1874 and Published Posthumously. The text says a man chooses his calling before he is fitted to exercise his faculty of choice, and does not know the number of different callings and professions that exist. On the origin of the philologist, the text lists that a young man cannot have the slightest conception of what the Greeks and Romans were.

A passage on philologists says their condition may be seen in their indifference at the appearance of Wagner. The text also says that Wagner prizes his art too highly to go and sit in a corner with it, like Schumann. One note says that signs and miracles are not believed, and that only a Providence stands in need of such things.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher whose critiques of religion and morality, and his ideas of the will to power and eternal recurrence, left a deep mark on twentieth-century thought. His late works, written in isolation, grew increasingly urgent before mental collapse ended his career.
