Ronald Lovegear, fourteen years with Allied Electronix, rides in a coach through dusk-darkened Jersey meadows, embracing his burden with both arms. Ronald Lovegear congratulates himself for having induced his superiors to let him take home the company's most highly developed mechanism to date, and the text says he had told them that Pascal is a little weak on square roots.
Corinne says everyone will have Thursday nights off, while Pascal drags the vacuum cleaner back to its niche in the closet. When Ronald Lovegear calls from the laboratory in New York to ask how Pascal is getting along, Corinne answers that Pascal certainly ruined some of the tomato plants in the garden. Ronald does not offer to help the freight men drag the box outside; when they have gone he goes into the den, comes back with the pumpkin, opens the back door and hurls it out into the rain.
