About this book
Charles Dack gathers weather sayings and village customs from Peterborough and its surrounding district, where the traditions of four English counties meet. Published in 1911, this collection draws chiefly on sayings repeated to him personally within about fifteen miles of the city. Local proverbs sit alongside beliefs about church clocks, New Year's luck and the weather expected in each season. Dack also turns to John Clare's writings for accounts of rural life and old practices.
The entries preserve details as small as a coin placed in a child's new pocket, Valentine buns given by godparents and rules for choosing the day to cut one's nails. Descriptions of holiday games and harvest celebrations add scenes of communal amusement. Readers interested in English folklore or local history can trace how ordinary objects, calendar dates and familiar places acquired meanings in everyday life.
