About this book
Across the Plains, with Other Memories and Essays is a book by Robert Louis Stevenson. The book is addressed to Paul Bourget, who is told that he will never have heard the name of Vailima, most likely not even that of Upolu. The piece headed The Lantern-Bearers speaks of boys who congregated every autumn about a certain easterly fisher-village, where they tasted in a high degree the glory of existence.
The text tells the fable of the monk who passed into the woods, heard a bird break into song, and found himself on his return a stranger at his convent gates, for he had been absent fifty years. A travel scene says the writer fell sick outright the evening he left Laramie, and describes sleepers lying in uneasy attitudes in the long, hollow box of the car. A story tells of Mr. Thomson, who fell upon his knees in the midst of the bridge like a man praying, while the child thought Plainly the devil come for Mr. Thomson.
