About this book
The O'Donoghue is by Charles Lever and is subtitled Tale of Ireland Fifty Years Ago. A dedication signed Charles Lever to John Wilson, Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Edinburgh, says that as a boy the greatest happiness of the writer's life was in his writings. A scene by a fire-place shows a powerfully built old man whose hair was white as snow, named as the O'Donoghue himself. Opposite him sat a tall, spare, raw-boned figure whose grey eyes and high cheek-bones bore traces of a different race from that of the aged chieftain.
In one scene Sir Archy presses upon Kate's acceptance a sum of money sufficient for her outlay in the capital, and she asks whether he really desires that she should go to Dublin. In another scene a character tells Miss O'Donoghue that every step of this business has been marked by duplicity and cowardice, and mentions that the French had entered Bantry Bay with eleven vessels.
