About this book

A seaside search for rooms brings a married couple's different outlooks into view in the opening story of Thomas Hardy's Wessex Tales. William Marchmill concentrates on his business as a gunmaker, while Ella turns to books and imaginative pursuits. Their holiday accommodation introduces a setting where ordinary domestic arrangements carry personal significance. The collection contains six short stories rooted in the social life and customs of nineteenth-century Wessex.

Elsewhere, Barnet watches a new house take shape as Downe's children play in its unfinished rooms and Lucy Savile accompanies them. Conversations about space, furniture and gratitude reveal feelings that polite exchanges only partly express. Hardy's preface connects the tales with remembered local stories, beliefs and working lives. Readers interested in regional fiction will find close attention to houses, landscapes and the small differences between people's expectations, with relationships examined through everyday encounters.
