About this book

Women's claims to a place in scientific history guide this 1913 study by J. A. Zahm. In his preface, visits to Greece and the university towns of Italy prompt reflections on women as teachers, scholars and patrons of learning. Aspasia's circle in Athens and the women associated with Italian centers of study help establish his broader argument: intellectual achievement deserves fuller recognition in accounts of the past.

The book joins historical discussion with accounts of scientific work. Its treatment of Marie Curie follows experiments on uranium and thorium compounds, collaboration with Pierre Curie, and the difficult analysis of pitchblende that produced discoveries of polonium and radium. Attention to scarce materials, poverty and persistence gives the scientific narrative a practical dimension. Readers interested in the history of science can also examine how an early twentieth-century writer presented women's contributions and argued for their importance.
