About this book

The traveller recalls a protracted reverie on the summit of Galata’s tower and discovers that the visit has taken much more time than intended. The description of twilight places mosques, minarets and cypress-crowned heights beneath a gathering veil over Stamboul. The account describes Nicæa, Chalcedon and Ephesus as former capitals of provinces, associated with four general councils and long since reduced to ruins.

The river journey meets breakers stretching across the water, though none are described as so violent as the Zikr ul Aawaze. The discussion reports that many attribute the largest rapids to ruined bridges over the Tigris, but considers ruins of dams a more probable explanation. The traveller enters the Black Sea through the Sulina Canal, whose route passes for a great part through reed-covered lowland near sea-level.
