About this book

Peter Rabbit's narrow escape from Reddy Fox leads to an unexpected lesson about his own family. When Jenny Wren tells him of a southern relative that enjoys swimming, Peter insists she must be mistaken. His curiosity opens a children's nature book that uses animal conversations to explain the mammals of the United States and Canada. Rabbits, squirrels, bats, bears and sea mammals appear in the chapter sequence, with family relationships and habits taking the place of a conventional adventure plot.

Old Mother Nature's class makes physical differences easier to picture. Miner the Mole demonstrates how his broad, outward-facing hands move earth, while a discussion of his food challenges the assumption that he eats garden plants. Published in 1920, Thornton W. Burgess's book offers a look at how natural history was taught through stories. Its stated concern for wildlife protection also connects the lessons to care for animals and their surroundings.
