About this book

A face in a painting and a friend's recollection can produce very different pictures of the same writer. Edited by Mabel E. Wotton in 1887, this collection assembles descriptions of British literary figures, including their features, clothing, voices and habits. Its range runs from Geoffrey Chaucer to Ellen Wood, with entries for Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and many others. References accompany the passages, and an asterisk marks accounts based on pictures or other evidence rather than direct observation.

The opening entry examines competing portraits of Joseph Addison, then turns to his reserve in company. Later, descriptions of Charles Lamb place a gentle sleeping face beside Carlyle's much harsher impression and Talfourd's affectionate recollection. Those changes of viewpoint are part of the interest: a writer's appearance becomes a record of how observers looked, remembered and judged. Readers interested in literary biography can compare these small personal details with the familiar names attached to books.
