About this book
World of the Mad is by Poul Anderson. The opening lines say that Langdon had found immortality on the planet Tanith, and that naturally he wanted his wife to share it, if he could prevent her from going insane first. The text speaks of voices in the fog, singing in high unhuman tones, and says no man had ever learned what it was that sang.
Langdon stands in a well of silence while a city lies around him, a city that is not a human city and lies under three hurtling moons. The text describes a twilight deep and blue and full of flitting ghostly lights, with feathery trees murmuring to each other in a language of their own. The text says that a day on Tanith is more than a lifetime on Terra, but that they will never know that because they have never felt it.
