About this book

Young Auctioneers, by Edward Stratemeyer, carries the subtitle "Or, The Polishing of a Rolling Stone". Caleb Gulligan tells Andrew Dilks "I lay the accident at the door of the young woman" and says she "will pay the bill" or "take the consequences". Matt, who has overheard the conversation, whispers to the stenographer "Skip out. They haven't any right to make you trouble."

Matt Lincoln bars the way of Caleb Gulligan, and when told "You have aided that young woman to escape!" Matt answers "That's just what I meant to do". Matt's steady reply is "I haven't been near your store, and I know nothing about the theft." Isaac Marvelling says "We both saw you jump the fence and skip off in this direction." A drunken man is trying to knock Matt out with a stick, and the senior partner of the firm rushes up to Matt's assailant and drags him by the collar from behind the counter.
