Robert Service
1947
Robert Service is a British historian of Russia who was professor of Russian history at Oxford until his retirement. He is a fellow of St Antony's College and an associate fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford. He has written lives of Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky, a history of world communism titled Comrades, and Russia: Experiment with a People, on the years after 1991. The Penguin History of Modern Russia carries the story from the last tsar through Lenin and Stalin to Gorbachev, Yeltsin and Putin, and he has revised it repeatedly since it first appeared, most recently to bring it up to 2020. He is a different writer from Robert W. Service, the poet of the Yukon.
