Russia: A History is an edited volume rather than a single narrative, and Gregory L. Freeze assembled it: nine specialists taking a period each, from the Kievan Rus through the Mongols, the Muscovite state, the empire, 1917, the Soviet decades and after, published by Oxford University Press and revised across three editions. Freeze himself is a historian of the Russian Orthodox Church and of the social history of the imperial period, and taught at Brandeis University for decades. His own books include The Parish Clergy in Nineteenth-Century Russia and The Russian Levites.
