Ahmed Taibaoui is an Algerian novelist and university professor whose fiction examines exclusion, memory, bureaucracy, and social marginalization. The Disappearance of Mr. Nobody is his fourth novel and his first published novel in English. The American University in Cairo Press published the translation by Jonathan Wright after the original Arabic edition received the 2021 Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature. Set primarily in Algiers, the novel begins with an unnamed caretaker living beside an elderly man, then changes perspective after both men vanish from ordinary view. A police search opens onto poverty, institutional indifference, and the difficulty of proving that an isolated person mattered. Taibaoui gives the narrative the movement of crime fiction without reducing it to a conventional puzzle, using disappearance to study identity and social erasure. Earlier novels received the Tayeb Salih International Prize and the President of the Republic Award in Algeria. Through the Hoopoe imprint, Wright brings those concerns to English readers while preserving the compact structure and shifting viewpoints that distinguish The Disappearance of Mr. Nobody.
