Mary Kubica
1978
The Good Girl alternates between before and after an abduction and between the mother, the detective and the kidnapper, which is a lot of machinery for a first novel and mostly holds.
Kubica writes domestic suspense set around Chicago and returns to the same question: how much a family can be wrong about one of its own members. Local Woman Missing and Just the Nicest Couple followed. The prose is functional rather than distinguished, and the plotting is where the work went.
