Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy was a Russian novelist, dramatist, and science-fiction writer whose work moved between historical narrative, social satire, and technological speculation. The Garin Death Ray is an English title for his 1920s novel The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin. The story follows engineer Pyotr Garin, whose concentrated-energy device becomes an instrument of personal ambition and attempted global control. Tolstoy developed the invention decades before practical lasers, using its technical detail to examine power, greed, industrial wealth, and political instability. George Hanna translated the version issued by the Soviet Foreign Languages Publishing House in the 1950s; a 2025 Tough Poets Press edition revives that translation. Tolstoy also wrote the science-fiction novel Aelita and the historical trilogy The Road to Calvary, demonstrating a range wider than this single technological thriller. The Garin Death Ray remains distinctive because the device is not merely futuristic scenery.
