Allison M. Dickson
Allison M. Dickson works across horror, suspense, science fiction, and other speculative forms, placing ordinary choices inside unsettling worlds. The Stargazers is a 2012 paranormal fantasy about Aster, a young guardian from Ellemire charged with returning lost magic to her homeland. Generations of Stargazer witches have crossed into Earth’s world to continue that task, and prophecy gives Aster’s mission unusual importance. Her aunt Oleander tries to control the outcome, leaving Aster to decide whether inherited duty justifies its personal cost. Dickson builds the novel around competing forms of obligation: responsibility to a threatened community, obedience to tradition, and the right to choose one’s future. Her later bibliography ranges from independently issued short fiction to the psychological thriller The Other Mrs. Miller, published by Putnam. Portal fantasy and family conflict reinforce each other here, making the restoration of magic inseparable from Aster’s struggle for moral independence.
