Author: Anne Hollingsworth Wharton

Anne Hollingsworth Wharton (1845-1928) was an American writer and historian from a prominent Philadelphia family, a direct descendant of Robert Wharton, the city's longest-serving mayor. She built her reputation on the social history of colonial and Revolutionary America with books such as Colonial Days and Dames (1894), Life of Martha Washington (1897), and Social Life in the Early Republic (1902). She served as historian of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and held a Litt.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Later in her career she turned to European travel writing, including English Ancestral Homes of Noted Americans (1915).
