Jake Vanderplas

VanderPlas came to programming through astronomy, needing to handle survey data too large to look at, and stayed to build the tools. The Python Data Science Handbook covers NumPy, pandas, matplotlib and scikit-learn as a working reference rather than a course, and he released the whole text free online alongside the printed edition. He has argued at length that scientific results built on code should ship with the code, and worked at the University of Washington eScience Institute and later at Google on the same problem.
