For roughly ten years Charles G. West wrote at night and early morning after a full day in his commercial print shop, working on an IBM typewriter and gathering rejections. A small Denver publisher took a science fiction thriller called The Tenant, and then Signet bought a western, Stone Hand, which appeared in March 1998 and brought a request for more of its tracker, Jason Coles. Black Eagle came later the same year. Coles has quit scouting to raise horses, and the Cheyenne warrior Little Claw burns the ranch and carries off his wife and child to settle accounts for Stone Hand, which drags him back to the trail he had left. Shoot-out at Broken Bow, from 2009, sits on the lawman side of his output, the group he steers readers to when they ask where to begin. West has published more than forty westerns for Signet and later Pinnacle, won the Western Writers of America Spur Award in 2018 for Hell Hath No Fury, and lives in Florida.
