Darcy Frey

Darcy Frey teaches narrative nonfiction and publishes reporting in The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, and Rolling Stone. The Last Shot expanded an award-winning magazine article into a book about four gifted players at Abraham Lincoln High School in Coney Island. Published by Houghton Mifflin in 1994, it follows their senior season, family pressures, academic barriers, and encounters with college recruitment. Future professional player Stephon Marbury is among the young athletes Frey observed. The book’s focus is broader than competition: it examines how schools, recruiters, neighborhood expectations, and the business surrounding college sport shape what appears to be an individual opportunity. Frey later taught literary nonfiction at Harvard, where his interests include essay, memoir, travel writing, and literary science writing. The Last Shot remains his best-known book because its patient reporting keeps institutional criticism connected to distinct young lives and ambitions.
