Frederick Joseph
Frederick Joseph writes nonfiction, poetry, and books for younger readers with an emphasis on civic responsibility and lived experience. The Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person addresses racism through personal stories, cultural examples, and conversations with artists and activists. Candlewick published it in 2020. Better Than We Found It, coauthored with Porsche Joseph and released by the same press in 2022, widens the lens to sixteen social and political topics, supported by more than two dozen interviews. Its contributors include writers, public officials, and organizers. The subjects span disinformation, the wealth gap, education, housing, climate, and immigration. Joseph's bibliography also includes Patriarchy Blues and the picture book Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: The Courage to Dream. His work as an activist, philanthropist, and marketing professional informs a direct style designed to make complex public questions accessible without presenting them as abstract debates.
