David J. Williams
David J. Williams writes military science fiction and game narratives that emphasize political systems, orbital conflict, and networked warfare. The Burning Skies is the middle volume of his Autumn Rain trilogy, following The Mirrored Heavens and preceding The Machinery of Light. Bantam Spectra published it in 2009. The series imagines a twenty-second-century struggle between American and Eurasian powers after the destruction of a space elevator, with agents, soldiers, and hackers confronting the elusive organization called Autumn Rain. Williams has described the project as a hybrid of spy thriller and science fiction rather than a straightforward cyberpunk narrative. Born in Hertfordshire and later based in the United States, he studied history at Yale, attended the Clarion West Writers Workshop, and worked in video games. His credits include the Homeworld universe, and he later co-wrote Transformers: Retribution with Mark S. Williams. The Burning Skies combines rapid tactical movement with information systems, manipulated memory, and competing political narratives that affect what its characters believe they are fighting for.
