Debby Applegate works as a historian and biographer whose research turns individual lives into broad American social history. Madam traces Polly Adler’s journey from an immigrant childhood to notoriety in Jazz Age New York, placing her business, court battles, political connections, and public reputation inside the city’s changing culture. Doubleday first issued the biography in 2021, and Anchor later published the paperback. Applegate worked on the project for thirteen years, drawing on Adler’s papers and material left by Virginia Faulkner, the collaborator behind Adler’s memoir. The book followed The Most Famous Man in America, Applegate’s biography of Henry Ward Beecher, which received the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. That earlier work established her interest in complicated public figures whose lives reveal larger American tensions. Madam applies the same documentary approach to nightlife, immigration, gender, organized crime, and ambition. Rather than treating Adler as a colorful footnote, Applegate makes her the center of a detailed account of twentieth-century Manhattan and its informal networks of power.
