Devorah Heitner holds a PhD in media, technology and society from Northwestern University and has taught there and at DePaul. Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World, published in 2016, makes the case that children need mentoring in how they use phones and group chats rather than tracking software and confiscation, and it spends as much time on what parents model as on what children do. She founded Raising Digital Natives, through which she is paid for keynotes and workshops in schools, and she consults for nonprofits on digital wellbeing policy and for technology companies building products aimed at young people. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and Education Week. A second book, Growing Up in Public, followed in 2023.
