Dmitri Trenin
Dmitri Trenin is a Russian foreign-policy analyst and historian whose 2019 book Russia surveys the country’s twentieth-century political development. The phrase Russia Polity Histories combines the one-word title with the publisher’s series name. Polity issued the volume as the third book in its Polity Histories sequence, designed to give compact national histories to general readers. Trenin moves from revolution and the Soviet period through wartime devastation, perestroika, state collapse, and the consolidation of the Russian Federation. Independent academic reviews describe the book as a concise account that emphasizes continuity between successive Russian states and the enduring importance of sovereignty and political unity in its argument. At publication, Trenin directed the Carnegie Moscow Center, where he had long written on security, foreign policy, and relations between Russia and the West. That institutional affiliation ended in 2022, so it belongs to the book’s publication context rather than his current role.
