Douglas William Jerrold

Douglas William Jerrold made his mark as a dramatist, journalist, and satirist, with Punch giving him a natural home for compressed comic observation. Mrs Caudle’s Curtain Lectures became his most popular work after first appearing through that periodical. Its linked monologues preserve the nightly complaints of Mrs Caudle while her husband Job listens from bed, turning umbrellas, household expenses, clubs, fairs, and social obligations into elaborate domestic arguments. Jerrold's framing introduction explains the accidental phrase that suggested the character and presents Job as the patient recorder of her speeches. He also wrote plays, novels, essays, and political journalism, and later edited Douglas Jerrold's Weekly Newspaper and Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper. The lectures endure because their repeated situation permits constant variation: each ordinary incident becomes a performance in voice, timing, exaggeration, and one-sided reasoning, suited equally to print and public reading.
