Eli Clare is a writer, educator, and activist whose work brings disability, gender, class, race, and environmental politics into the same field of inquiry. Brilliant Imperfection examines cure as both a practical intervention and a powerful cultural ideal. Using memoir, history, and critical analysis, Clare asks what happens when body-minds marked as broken are treated as problems requiring correction. Duke University Press publishes the book with the subtitle Grappling with Cure. Its examples range from medical treatment and gender transition to weight loss, skin lightening, and ecosystem restoration, allowing Clare to test simple arguments for or against cure against lived contradictions. The book extends concerns also present in Exile and Pride, especially the value of bodily difference and the relationship between identity, landscape, and social power.
