F. C. Yee
The Rise of Kyoshi fills in a character the animated series mentioned in passing: an Avatar who was politically ruthless and lived to two hundred and thirty.
Yee writes her as an unwanted, awkward servant, and the reveal that she is the one everybody has been hunting for lands early, and the books are considerably darker than the show, with a body count and a moral position the cartoon could not take.
He also writes contemporary fantasy drawing on Chinese mythology, including a series in which a teenage girl inherits the Monkey King's mantle whether she wants it or not.
